Day to Day News

22nd June 2017

Such a lot has happened in the last year and I apologise for not updating regularly......Last September Lily had a beautiful litter of puppies.....of which I have kept Piper....a lovely red and white bitch. She is coming along nicely and we have started showing her.....she hasnt been overly keen, but is getting happier at it now....hoping to have another litter later this year and keep another pup to show alongside Piper.....but we will see......January was an awful month....tragically lost Harper....at 2 and a half years old it was too soon and we were all totally heartbroken......she has left a very large hole here at home......and then Morgan injured her back....was paralysed and unable to walk....she has been having some amazing Bowen Therapy treatment which has got her back up and walking.....really thought I was going to lose her too.....we take it all day by day....Madison continues to have small TIA's....shes quite a miracle to still be here with all she has been through....life is extremely busy, what with the dogs, dog club and running 3 shows a year.....but will try harder to update here more often...Laughing

28th June 2016

Heartbroken doesnt come close......Had to say goodbye to my precious Daisy yesterday after 12 wonderful years of her fun and daft antics....life just won't be the same without her.....I'm just devastated......but her little body had just had enough....she made an impression on all who met her....the sweetest, kindest basset ever born.....love you always my little angel xxx😘❤️😘xxx

1st March 2016

Life is so busy.....dont seem to get here as often as I would like.....being secretary of our local dog club keeps me incredibly busy....plus running that website and Facebook page, but its all good...We have moved house, which is good, settling nicely and the dogs love it....Harper is coming along really well in her Obedience training.....about to start learning 'tracking'.....should be good as she is very switched on......but planning on doing more intensive training with her in the summer....the bassets are wonderfui as always....Daisy is starting to show her age now with a few things going wrong, bless her, she is still the most loveliest basset in the world, daft as a brush...a real comedian....I havent been out showing much at all......thinking I would like another puppy....Laughing....lets hope that happens in the near future.....

12th July 2015

Harper is celebrating her 1st birthday today......cant quite believe she is year old already......amazing what she has achieved in that short time.....bless her.......Madison is improving......not saying too much, but the new treatment is working.....she is well more than she is poorly.....enjoying life as well...couldnt ask for more....... she came on a short road trip with us....she wanted to come....she hasnt done that since the poisoning, I was so happy i could of cried.....really hope she has properly turned the corner now and she can get back to enjoying life again....

My first time as Show Secretary for Okehampton & District Canine Society went really well with our Obedience Show being a great success.....such a lot of work goes into these shows.....full on again now for our Breed Show in Septemeber....I am really enjoying the challenge....much to learn but its really interesting...keeps me out of mischief! :)

29th June 2015

My amazing Harper passed her Kennel Club Good Citizens Silver Test tonight......so proud of her......its quite a challenge, especially as she is only 11 months old.......training to now commence for her Gold! but I think we might take our time before we try that one.....she is such a clever girl.....

26th June 2015

Things have been very up and down with Madison......really thought we had come to the end of the road......when I was put in touch with an 'holistic' lady over in America.....spoke to her and told her Madisons history since the poisoning....she sent her over several remedies and after a few up and down weeks things have evened out and she has had 1 bad day out of 7....this is totally amazing and more than I could of wished for.....no doubt she will have more down days but if the good days outweigh the bad ones I will be happy.....its been so lovely having her come into the garden and toddle about with me, roll in the grass and have a little woo woo bark.....it had been her just huddled in her bed sleeping and shaking and generallly miserable.....cant thank this lady enough.....shes like an angel that has been sent to us...

I have been working hard with Harper on the Obedience training.....she is such a good girl and loves her Monday night at club.....although she had to stay home for a few weeks as she had her first season, but now thats out of the way we can really get back into it.....been busy in the garden, sorting and planting......was hoping to do another Basset Walk this year but what with one thing and another I dont think i can.....might have to try and get it sorted for Spring next year......I will let you all know if things change though....

5th May 2015

Today is the 11th birthday of my beautiful Daisy.....cant believe she is 11 already....she still behaves like a puppy and is definitely the naughtiest of them all......although Lily is a very close second on the naughty stakes.....we have had a fabulous Bank Holiday weekend with all the family home and a BBQ in the garden.....Ken, Angela and Ellie Basset came to visit from Warwickshire, always makes my day to see them all....a pic below of my precious Daisy on her birthday xx

25th April, 2015

Pleased to report that Harper gained her Kennel Club Good Citizens Bronze Award on 30th March......pretty good going seeing as she is only 8 months old.....really proud of her and enjoying the training with her very much....Madison had some new medication which seems to have really done the trick.....so relieved as it was the last option......she is so much better, and once again Im so grateful to my wonderful vet....not sure what I would do without them sometimes......the hard drive went on my computer....I have pretty much lost everything.....got a wonderful new iMac but really missing some of the files from my old computer.....hoping my son can retrieve at least some of them for me.....its my own fault.....should of had it all back up on a seperate hard drive.....so annoying.....a photo below of Harper under the Rhododendron bush in full bloom.....beautiful.....both of them.....

28th January 2015

Christmas has come and gone......Madison is still having weekly episodes of being ill.....it's going to be a long long road to her recovery....on her good days she's much better in herself which is lovely.....but when she is ill it takes a couple of days for her to get back on track.....we just take it day by day.....my treatment has started so I'm travelling 2 hours a day to the hospital 3 times a week for the next 10 weeks.....quite daunting, but hopefully worth it in the end......my precious little Daisy had a fit today......found her in the paddock in a right old state, bless her.....finally managed to get her indoors, a phone call to the vets and she is going in tomorrow morning for blood tests and a check up......really hoping it's a one off...she's very quiet this evening, think it frightened her....and now she won't let me out of her sight....if I move shes right beside me.....fingers crossed we get good news on her.....she will be 11 soon....but still behaves like a naughty puppy most of the time.....don't think I could handle that changing....Daisy is Daisy....a one off!! I'm working hard on Harpers obedience training.....hoping she might be able to go for her KC Bronze award in the next couple of months.....she's only 6 months so doing really well....just have to hope she can continue to be really good when I need her too......had a few trips to the beach with the dogs over Christmas and New Year.....they really enjoyed it.....and it's great to see them running and playing and just having a thoroughly lovely time.....I will add photos soon....life is very very hectic right now....so will try and get to it as soon as I can....hope to be back soon with an update on Daisy.....Daisy Update......turns out she has an infection in the bladder which would of caused the fit as her temperature was raised......so looks like it was a one off......feeling incredibly relieved.....she's totally back to her old self....causing havoc wherever she goes......love her!

 4th December 2014

Well I was a little quick to say Madison was getting better....the last few weeks have been very up and down, she is having at least a couple episodes a week of the sickness and diarrhoea with blood.....she seems to have a couple of reasonable days then she's poorly again...it really is going to take quite sometime for her to receover from this.....if she ever does....its absolutely heartbreaking to watch her going through this.....yesterday was a particularly bad day...now just praying the space between episodes gets longer....she sleeps alot, Im guessing thats all part of her recovery....bless her little heart.....

Had a lovely visit from Angela, Ken and Ellie basset.....it was Madison and Ellies 8th birthday on the 2nd....really cant believe where the last 8 years have gone....anyway they gave me the most beautiful gift...I will upload a photo asap, but it is a plate with a basset hound painted in the middle with Devonhound Bassets printed on it....its absolutely beautiful....Im very blessed to have such kind lovely people in my life.....

As for Christmas.....with the stress of Madison and life in general I am so far behind....havent even written a Christmas card so I doubt I will be sending many this year....I do wish you all a very happy christmas though and lets hope next year is a much better one.....xxx

13th November. 2014

The  beach walk I organised in the summer raising funds for K9 Search dogs was published in The Crufts Magazine....my little granddaughter Tilly with Morgan on the left and bassets George and Humphrey on the right.....feeling very proud!

Madison is getting better every day....eating a little better now and hopefully gaining a little weight.....took her for a little stroll yesterday and she thoroughly enjoyed it......taking each day as it comes but I think its safe to say she in finally on the mend....Im so relieved......I was told that another dog that had been walking in the same woods has also been poisoned....now that I do find rather concerning.....I hope no-one has deliberately been putting poison down where lots of dogs are walked but also a lot of wild life live....unfortunately my gang wont be walked in the woods again....however lovely it is up there I couldn't risk ever putting one of my dogs through what Madison has been through....I feel very blessed that she is still with me...

7th November, 2014

Update on Madison....she is now finally home and recovering, it's very slow though.....ended up being in the vets on an IV fluid drip for 8 days in total....been such a worrying time, she really was so poorly....she is still being syringe fed a convalescent food as she's not keen to eat....she's still on antibiotics and meds to try and soothe her tummy which has just been striped of it's lining......it was from her mouth right through to her bum....poor little baby really has been through an awful time.....we think it must of been poison....and I'm very thankful to my vets for all the care they gave her, without them I have no doubt Madison would not of survived.....it feels like we take two steps forward and one back....since returning home she has still needed several visits back to the vet but hoping now she might be finally turning the corner....I think it will take quite sometime to get her back to what she was......lots of rest and care is on the menu....lots of cuddles too....

25th October 2014

Well, what an awful week this has turned out to be......went for a lovely walk to the woods.....met a friend and had Tilly, as it was only going to be a fairly short walk I only took Madison and Harper......at the end of the walk I saw Madison eat something which she wouldnt let Harper have, shes never been a scavenger so seemed odd really.....thought no more of it and went on home.....Thursday morning I came down to the most horrendous sight and stench!  It looked like the inside of Madisons stomach was on the floor.....briskly off to the vets and to cut a long story short she was kept in the vets for two and a half days on a fluid drip.  Finally got her home today but she is still very fragile and looks very sorry for herself....I gave her some chicken and rice earlier and half an our later she was sick.....so will try again later and hope it stays down or she will have to go back into the vets and go back on the drip......I have no idea what happened but I can only assume it was what she picked up in the woods.....she is the only one poorly.....a couple of years ago someone was putting poison down up there, I hope thats not happening again....I think it will take a while before Madison is back to her old self.....shes lost a lot of weight and really doesnt look very well.....bless her....

Harper is doing very well at puppy training.....she catches on quite quickly.....and she is growing like a little weed......cant believe she is 15 weeks old already.....we have a Dog Match in club soon......hoping she will be able to do the puppy class without showing me up too much.....at the moment she would rather sleep than do her ringcraft training, or play with her Malamute puppy friend.....they are two bundles of trouble when they get together.....

10th September, 2014

Well our little bundle of trouble has arrived.  Seemed to take an age before we could go and collect her, but at last she is here and making her presence known.  She has met all the other dogs, goats, cats, chickens, ducks and the parrot.  She found Herman the tortoise in his enclosure...We travelled up to Kettering on the friday, took over 6 hours as the traffic was awful.  We went and saw all the pups that evening and I chose her.  We decided to call her Harper, I wanted to call her  Piper all the way along, but once we had her Harper seemed to suit her better.....so its stuck. We stayed at a lovely place called The Woolpack Inn on the friday night, then saturday morning off we went to pick her up and travel home.  The journey home took 5 hours, and I still cant believe how brilliant she was, not a wee, poo or sick the whole way!!  Can't complain at that, hoping she will be a good traveller, and if thats anything to go by we wont have any problems at all.  She has settled in so well, shes is absolutely adorable.  Im sure Ebony would of loved her, such a shame she wasnt here long enough to meet Harper.

Went to Westbury Canine Society at the weekend and judged the bassets.  A lovely day with some lovely bassets and people.  Now have to get on with writing the critique!! Its our club show this weekend so getting busy ready for that.  Im stewarding all day so that will keep me out of mischef! Well maybe!!!

Meet Harper.............at 8 weeks

1st September, 2014

Archie and Harriet have arrived.....they are absolutely adorable and settled in like they have always been here.....they have a huge tractor tyre in the paddock which they love playing on and lots of things to play hide and seek with.  Tilly loves chasing them around. They will eat out of my hand now, I have put a chair in the field so I can sit in and just watch them, only caught them once jumping on it....which was quite funny....Lamby lived in that paddock for 4 years and never got out once, within the first week these two little monkeys escaped twice....fingers crossed we have sorted their little escape routes, but I have no doubt they will find another way out at some point!!

15th July, 2014

Life has been really harsh of late, as if losing Ebony wasnt bad enough......Lamby had her baby....a lovely little lamb, very big so she needed help to get it out but all seemed to be going well.....the lamb was up on its feet and feeding.....two days later I went up in the morning and found it had died.....Lamby just went downhill as well....the next day I asked the vet to come out as I couldnt get Lamby to stand up, the vet gave her treatment and the next morning she seemed to of improved slightly.....however later that day she started having fits so I called the vet out again and we decided to let her go to sleep.....such sadness over the last few weeks.....however, the day Lamby died my new rottie pup was born....something to look forward to at least....Lamby paddock is empty everytime I look out of the kitchen window....cant believe she has gone too.....

The Basset Beach Walk at Mothecombe in Plymouth was a storming success raising £200 for K9 Search Dogs.....everyone had a brilliant time and all the dogs were so well behaved.....Slideshow on the Walks/Events page....go have a look....and Evelyn Burnside completed my drawing of my 3 showgirls....Im absolutely thrilled with it, she has totally captured them.....what an amazing talent.....it is now proudly on the wall pride of place...

3rd July, 2014

Recently I had life put into perspective and I realised that I actually just take it for granted that I have my dogs to hug and cuddle whenever I choose....still coming to terms with losing Ebony.......when I receive a phone call from a family who were in hospital with an amazingly brave lady called Bev.  Her dying wish was to hug a basset, she has always wanted one, but it never seemed to happen.....I put Morgan in the car and off we went, an hour later we arrive at the hospital, and Morgan happily walks into the hospital to meet this incredibly courageous, brave lady and when she saw Morgan her eyes lit up.....it was lovely to see.  We put Morgan on the bed and she stroked her ears and head, obvious to all that Bev was enjoying having Morgan there.  Her hospital wardrobe was covered in pictures of bassets.....the whole experience made me realise how lucky I am to be able to sit with my gang and enjoy everything about them.  I am so proud that Morgan was able to give Bev, her partner, family and friends her wish.

21st June, 2014

My beautiful Ebony went to The Rainbow Bridge on Monday 16th June, 2014.....words cannot describe our sadness......

We were having a few visits to the vets, Ebony was struggling a bit with arthritis in her back legs....but we expected that with her having snapped both cruciate ligaments at a young age.  Painkillers etc seemed to be keeping her fairly good most of the time.  We had a few episodes of her collapsing on her rear end, when she started to do this with her front I took her back to the vets for another check up and she needed a top up of painkillers as well.....after seeing her the vet asked for her to go in and have xrays on the Monday so having a busy day planned with hospital appointments I dropped her off planning to collect her later that afternoon.  The call came that I never ever expected.  Ebony had a tumor in her front leg that was really advanced and causing her great pain.....I begged for one more night with her....my vet was basically saying he couldnt guarentee to keep her out of pain but at this point I was thinking, I just want her for one more night....never thought I wouldnt be bringing her back home that day......sorted things and got myself back to the vets.....where I was shown her xray.....bless her little heart, what an awful sight, her leg had a big advanced tumor but was also fractured so she must of been in much pain, I knew at that point I couldnt take her home, not to suffer anymore.... but looking at her beautiful face made it even harder to accept what was happening.....I took her for a little amble about in my vets orchard, just to spend a little time with her before I had to say goodbye forever....she went to sleep so quickly with her head in my arms.....Rainbow Bridge now has a wonderful, kind, gentle, one in a million rottie.  Missing her so much....as are the bassets.....she was only 8 so I feel far to young to have been taken from me....she gave so much to us as a family.....and will never be able to thank her enough for saving the lives of all those basset puppies....my wonderful Ebony....RIP precious girl xxx

10th April, 2014

The visiting bassets are now back home......Somerset is at last drying out. I went on another seminar....Requirements of a Dog Show Judge.....certificate below.  It was an interesting day, lots to learn and think about.  Really pleased I passed the exam.....I think I might look out for another Basset Hound Seminar...I did one years ago in Wales but would quite like to do another.....

Haven't been doing much showing.  Been focusing on Morgan who was due to have a litter of puppies on the 17th April.  Unfortunately she absorbed the litter again at 6 weeks.  totally devastating.  Its not the first time she has done this, so my vet and I have tried several things to make the pregnancy go full term.  Progesterone levels were checked weekly throughout, she had lots of tests but nothing abnormal was found so it looks like she just thinks pups are a foreign body and she absorbs....Im really quite sad as I so desperately wanted a puppy for the show ring from her, but some things just aren't meant to be and Morgan having puppies is one of them.. She is happy and healthy and thats all that matters.

Ebony is struggling on her back legs.....arthritis in her hips......she is now on medication for the rest of her days.....the meds have made a huge difference which is really pleasing.  As long as she is happy and pain free then Im happy.  Im struggling with the fact that one day her legs will fail her......and when that time comes I will have to say goodbye....hoping it wont be for quite sometime yet.....but it will be long before her time.....life is cruel!!

Had a lovely visit from Angela, Ken and Ellie the basset from Warwickshire.....I always get spoilt, this time a gorgeous Basset Hound Cushion....

8th March, 2014

Life has been quite busy since the last check in......unfortunately my friend who lives on the Somerset Levels was flooded along with most of the village where she lives.....she was evacuated along with all the animals.....4 bassets came to stay with us.....so its even busier here at the moment that usual.....walking takes quite some time as I have to go twice.....really just cant manage 9 dogs in one go unless someone comes with me....and seeing as they are usually out to work I dont get many offers to help.........a pic below of them all......little sweeties.....

Its my local club show (Okehampton & District Canine Society) next weekend, so getting ready for that....Im spending the day stewarding, so looking forward to that, firstly have to help set the show up then clear away after......its a lovely day though, really looking forward to it.....and we have just bagged a fabulous new venue for our Autumn Show, a brand new modern building with all mod cons....cant wait for that....I didnt go to Crufts this year.....and I really wished I had, so next year I have decided to go whatever.....missed the shopping and all the showing.....been watching all the TV coverage though, but still only get glimpses really.....next year!!  Definitely......no excuses.....

18th January 2014

Is it really that long ago that I was here with news!!! Life has been really busy, all the family were home for Christmas which was fantastic.  Amazing time with our little granddaughter, she has just turned one so is great fun now....started walking and is all over the place.....but I wont start talking about her as I dont know when to stop.....she is just the most wonderful little person.........I haven't been showing too much, after seeing my consultant I have started a new treatment and it totally knocked me for six....finially starting to feel better and thankfully it looks like the treatment is working.....keeping everything crossed....just had some friends dogs stay for a week so Lily was in her element having a new friend to cause havoc with!  And cause havoc they did!!  They do make me laugh.  Had a successful rehoming of a basset just before Christmas (not one of mine), he has settled well and is really happy....I do like a happy ending....Went to a seminar on Conformation and Movement in November by David Cavill....it was really interesting and gave me the bug to do more, so I am now booked to do a Requirements of a Dog Show Judge the end of March.....just have to hope my brain remembers enough to pass the exam!  My certificate below......

Unfortunately Mr Fox had a visit....during the day!!! Cheeky thing, and sadly took 6 of the baby chickens....they were getting to a nice size so would of made a fairly good meal for baby foxes....not happy though and nothing I can do as it was through the day, my chickens are free range and I dont feel I can shut them in all the time, so I have to hope the fox doesnt come back.....

10th November 2013

Not quite sure where the time goes but it certainly flies by.....had several shows all of which we have done quite well at.....Madison has had two Group 1 placings in the last couple of months, hard to believe she starts in veteran classes in December....she doesn't look or behave like she is 7.....which Im rather pleased about.......well from the 5 eggs the hen was sitting on only one hatched, however another hen decided she wanted babies and from her clutch she hatched 12.....they are all rather sweet....lovely watching them being taught how to do everything by her.....nature really is a wonderful thing...... the gang are all great.....they have so enjoyed the beautiful summer weather we had....none of us are enjoying the rain that Autumn is bringing....we were incredibly spoilt by having such a lovely summer.....not looking forward to Winter at all.....although with the way time seems to go by so quickly it will be summer again before we know it.......we have a lovely little Tibetan Terrier called Lulu staying with us for a couple of days....her and Lily are great pals and get up to all kinds of mischief.....although the last time she stayed it was sunny and dry.....this time the paddock is very wet.....so she might have to be bathed before I give her back........Im off now to see if I can get to sit on the sofa and watch some TV.....at the last look Daisy and Morgan had taken up residence....nothing new there!!

29th July 2013

Had a fun couple of weeks...the walk at Mothecombe was absolutely brilliant...only about 22 dogs turned up but they all behaved impeccably and really enjoyed themselves....the weather was warm but we had a lovely breeze and dogs and people all had a paddle.....it was super......will definitely be organising another down there, let me know if you want to come along.....you really wont be disappointed.....

I judged a Fun Companion Show this weekend....that was great fun, have to admit I was a bit nervous, but apparently I did really well.....hopefully good enough to be asked again sometime in the future.....it was a brilliant experience...and I was lucky enough to have some really lovely dogs to judge....just relieved I didnt mess it up!!!  Then on Sunday, I went off to The South of England Basset Hound Club Show with Lily and Morgan, we didnt do terribly well but it was a lovely day...got caught in a couple of heavy showers but it just cooled things down really which was rather nice.....and this evening Im taking Morgan to my local dog training where there is a match tonight....be nice to see everyone before it breaks up for the summer.....I have a hen sitting on 5 eggs....so it will be interesting to see how many hatch which should be later this week.....

15th July 2013

Life has been chaotic with one thing and another......right now we are all enjoying the sunshine, we have waited a long time for it, so I for one am hoping its here to stay for a while......the dogs are loving it too...sunbathing in the paddock then finding a shady spot when they get too hot.....walks are much later in the evening as its just too hot to venture out in the day.  Havent had any shows for a while, just started back again now, the break has been nice, but its equally nice to get back and see everyone.....this weekend is the next basset walk.....we are off to Mothecombe Beach in Plymouth, hoping there is a good turn out of people and dogs again.....if its hot the dogs can jump in the water for a cool down.....us humans might be joining them......hope to see you all there.....fab little cafe for refreshments afterwards...all proceeds to Basset Hound Welfare and the Basset Hound Health Group.....just planning on a collection on the day if anyone wanted to donate....off now to bath the dogs.....worming and flea treatments are due....they are going to love me!!!

20th April 2013

Such a lot has been going on since Crufts......the main one being the Beach Walk, which you can read about on the Walks/Events page if you haven't already......amazed at the wonderful support it received and the amount of money raised was simply staggering.....looking into organising the next one now seeing as that was so well attended. I did a write up about the day and it has hit the website of Dog World Newspaper, so again delighted with that, and hopefully it will make print next week.....its all good for bringing awareness as well as funds to both Basset Hound Welfare and The Basset Hound Health Group....but seeing all the bassets and the few other breeds on the beach having such a wonderful time was a sight I hope to see again very soon.....truly fantastic....

Lily decided to come into season so she's out of the show ring for a few weeks...Morgan is nearly there, so I will be glad when that is all done and out of the way......the sun has started to shine.......so really hoping the nice weather is on the way, its been so, so cold and wet and just plain miserable....Ebony is out in the paddock sunbathing as I sit here in my office typing....think I might slope off and join them all out there for a game and chase about.....

9th March 2013

Had a super day at Crufts with Madison coming home with a 3rd in the Open Bitch class....she was up against the top winning champion bassets and some imports, so to get a 3rd was absolutely fantantic.  Lily wasnt the judges type this year and was unplaced, but she showed beautifully and was so well behaved in the ring, I couldnt ask for more.  Im sure I will be back at Crufts with her next year with hopefully a better result......but as always I brought the best dogs home.....caught up with some lovely friends......Ken and Angela came down from Warwickshire to see us and Annie and her hubby also came and found us so it was brilliant.......travelling home wasnt quite so good....very slow in places but I think thats all part and parcel of going to Crufts..... Im now making arrangements for the Basset Hound Beach Walk Im organising down at Exmouth beach, managed to get a fab raffle prize from the Kennel Club so I hope lots of you can join us on the 13th April with your hounds, although any breed is most welcome....I will put more details on here soon so pop back for an update......a pic below of Madisons Crufts rosette and card.....

28th February 2013

I have received two lovely rosettes from The Branch of the Basset Hound Club of Wales.....awarded to my show girls Madison, Morgan and Lily for all there winning achievements in the show ring in the year 2012....Im so pleased that the committee thought highly enough of my girls to give them these awards.....a pic below........

Im now getting ready for Crufts.......looking forward to a lovely day seeing friends and watching the basset hound judging as well as competing.......off for a walk tomorrow with a lovely friend and her basset......Torrington Common......look out the bassets are coming!!

18th February 2013

Morgan has been doing so well at the shows lately.......she came home with a Group 3 last weekend and Group 1 this weekend......clever girl.....Lily hurt her leg so has been having a rest, it was nothing too serious, but I had a McTimoney treatment done on her and it was fabulous.....she is totally back to normal, no lameness and is as happy as Larry......she is having a follow up treatment next week just to be sure everything is fine, she loved having it done......just like a massage......lucky dog!!  Its her first birthday tomorrow, cant believe she is a year old already....time flies far too quickly.......meeting up with her other mummy Sandra tomorrow for a walk.....

Went to Exmouth Beach today with the girls....Im sorting out a Basset Hound Beach Walk, hoping to be in late April......I will put details on here when a date is finalised.......hopefully we will get lots of bassets together, although any breed is more than welcome.......the sea air has totally tired me out and the girls are all fed, watered and now sleeping.....they have the life!!

12th January, 2013

With much sadness we had to say goodbye to our precious Zeus yesterday.  He had kidney failure and had become quite a poorly boy.  At nearly 14 years of age he did quite well really. His presence is sorely missed though. The girls are all quiet, Ebony especially as her and Zeus really were partners in crime.......He was buried next to Jemma....and I hope hes now found her and they are playing together again......run free beautiful boy x x

Happy New Year to you all.....cant believe how quickly time has passed.  Lots has been happening, firstly, our precious little granddaugher was born in November....she is amazing, but I shall stop there as I can go on a bit about her.....lol....in the show ring we have been doing very well.  Lily has been doing fantastically well every time she has been out.  Took her and Morgan to LKA, where they both qualified for Crufts.  It was Lily's first champ show and she was so good.  It was also Morgans first champ show of the year and her last chance to qualify and she didnt let  me down, bless her.....I did leave it rather late!!  Christmas was wonderful, the house was full of family and with the new arrival to the family it made it even more special.

We had a lovely walk on the beach just after New Year, the dogs were having a wonderful time racing around chasing each other.  We were walking into the sea just slightly as the waves were tiny, then all of a sudden this massive wave came and got us.....it was like a tsunami !!!!  None of us was very impressed.....Madison was most put out which was hysterical.....I had my wellie boots full of water and every step I took was squelchy!!  To make matters worse I needed fuel in the van so in my drenched state I then have to go to the garage and squelch inside to pay for the fuel....not happy!!  I was freezing cold by this time.... it was all good fun though...the dogs enjoyed it and slept for England once they got home.

We have had two shows since Christmas and Lily has come away with Best Puppy from both,  so pleased with that.  January is turning out to be quite busy with one thing and another.  Just hoping the rain stays away, we have had a few dry days pretty much and it's been a pleasant change......really had enough of the rain, and so many have had it much worse than us......roll on Summer!!

23rd October 2012

Quite a lot has happened in the last month.....Had several shows which the girls did really well at.  Madison at my local Club Show won Best of Breed and then got 4th in the Group under a basset judge, so I was really thrilled with that as Ive found most basset people when judging an Open Show group dont put up a basset.....so Madison did great....as always.....Morgan came 2nd to her that day and got Reserve Best of Breed.....the following day at a show in Cornwall, Morgan came home the winner.....different judge, different opinion.  Lily is having her first season....poor little girl, its not been kind to her, we are now on the home run so hopefully she will be back to her usual self very soon and she can resume normality.......

Madison and I got our names and picture in the newspaper......woohoo.....how exciting was that.....the newspaper was highlighting the dog show venue so thats how we made it to print.....I bought a copy of the paper, thought it might be nice to keep......We have a few weeks off from showing, which has worked out well really.....life is really quite hectic and the arrival of our first grandchild is nearly here.....I cant wait, really exciting.......

Angela, Ken and Ellie came down to visit from Warwick which was wonderful as always....Ellie is a little dream......met up with Ben and Michelle and their bassets Martha (Madisons daughter) and Molly and they all had a play in the park.....got some lovely photos.....and Fiona and Kevin came to visit with their basset Millie which is also Madisons daughter and Martha's sister, so I have had a fantastic few weeks of seeing all these babies......a slideshow below.....

24th September 2012

Had a brilliant weekend.....Lily was an absolute star at her first show......coming away with Best AV Puppy then 2nd in the Puppy Group, she was really well behaved and seemed unfazed by the day....she took everything in her stride and was happy to meet and greet all the other dogs and people.  Morgan also got Best of Breed beating Madison, as they both won their classes, so its always fun when they both come up against each other for Best of Breed as I have to get someone to handle one of them for me.....I now need to create a new page alongside Madison and Morgan for "Lily's Show wins".....I really could do with a photo of Lily for the top of the page too....if only I could keep her still long enough to take the photo!!....

A photo below of Lily's rosettes....her first ever......such a clever girl.....

17th September 2012

Lots has been going on the last couple of weeks......two open shows at the weekend, Madison came out on top Saturday at Exeter and then Morgan on Sunday at Cornwall....the weekends seem to be full of shows, next weekend again I have two, Lily has her debut on Saturday at Exeter....should be fun.....will be interesting to see how she behaves in an enviroment full of dogs......dog training and a show are totally worlds apart.....nothing seems to faze her though so Im sure she will take it in her stride.  Went to Roadford Lake this morning for a walk with the girls. Met up with my friend and her hubby which was wonderful. Mainly went to see the new Sundial which my friends husband actually was a big part in making.....it is an absolutely stunning sight.....and I totally recommend a trip down there to see it if your around the area......a pic below.....with my friends hubby hiding behind it.....lol.....it was a lovely walk though and as we were making our way back to the car I saw a couple walking holding a pet tortoise. I couldn't help but stop and say hello as I have a tortoise myself....this one they had nursed back to life and now it goes practically everywhere with them....never expected to see that while out walking......and they were such nice people too.......will be back next week with news of Lilys first time in the show ring......wish me luck..........

30th August 2012

Again another busy month has gone by. Had several shows which the girls did quite well at....At the Open shows it was either Madison or Morgan that came home with the Best of Breed.  I didnt enter Morgan at any of the Champ Shows but Madison came home with a 3rd from Bournemouth. She has decided to have a phantom pregnancy so she isnt on top form at the moment.....The shows are a great day out though and so nice to see other basset friends ....the rain seems to be relentless.  The nights are drawing in and getting chiller and we havent even had summer yet, so thats rather disappointing......I think its going to be a very long winter somehow........today I have lit the rayburn.....and the bassets have taken up residence in front of it......cant say I blame them, it really it quite miserable here today.  On to happier things.  I went into our local town and saw the most beautiful Antique Magohany Partner Desk with a Leather top which would look absolutely fantastic in my office.  Finally persuaded my hubby it was a good idea for us to have it and now it is beautifully installed in my office.  Its brilliant, he can sit one side and do his bits and I can sit the other.....no excuse now for him not  to do his paperwork....or me for that matter!!

Lance and I took the bassets for a lovely walk along the canal at Exeter.  It was a lovely sunny day so thought we would take advantage of it being dry.  I thought it would be a good idea to let the girls off their leads as they never go far from my side......we took Lily the puppy who is 6 mths old now, she never goes far from me when we are out so thought we were as safe as houses letting them have a sniff at their leisure!!  What a mistake that turned out to be......Lily within 3 minutes of being off the lead jumped straight into the canal.  I threw my camera and bag down, which Im lucky didnt also end up in the canal, and I knelt by the side of the water until she surfaced which seemed so so long......eventually she did come up all covered in horrid green algae.  I grabbed her neck as best I could but Lance was soon there and able to get a better hold of her and lift her out.....he was ready to jump in after her though, bless him......she gave herself a good shake and all this green slime slid off her......she didnt smell too sweet either......she was promptly put back on the lead as were the others and we decided to venture off to the nature reserve....seemed like a safer option.  They thoroughly enjoyed themselves and Lily wasnt at all fazed by her ordeal......I think I aged about 10 years on the spot!!  She has since been bathed and she smells much nicer now......It was a lovely walk up there too......I think I will take them back, but next time the leads will be staying on......

We have several Open Shows coming up now so they will keep me busy for a while......I will put any wins on Madison and Morgans pages......and I must do a new page for Lily as she will be starting in the show ring soon. Really looking forward to her first show, shes really good and well behaved when I practice at home and when we go to ringcraft, so will be interesting to see what she thinks when we are at a show doing it for real......her nickname at home is....Little Miss Naughty Pants......she is always up to some sort of mischief, she has a super temperament and she is great fun to have around but she really is totally bonkers.....Daisy (grandma of the gang) totally adores her, they are two of a kind as Daisy never moved on from being a puppy, so having Lily to play with is right up her street......if anything naughty is happening those two are the instigators........they are quite entertaining to watch.....

A photo below of Madison, Morgan and a soggy Lily on our walk at Exeter Canal........

31st July, 2012

Well the last couple of months have whizzed by!! We have like everyone else had nothing but rain, the bassets are as fed up with it as I am. Last week was fabulous with loads of sunshine, but this week the rain is back.  Just have to get on with it and hope that the sun shines at times too.  Angela, Ken and Ellie basset have been down to visit from Warwickshire again, its always lovely to see them. Went for a walk on Dartmoor with a lovely couple and their 3 Labradors.  They had a lovely black lab called Daisy, reminded me of my Jemma........we have also been to the beach a couple of times when the weather permitted.  We have several shows coming up now so that will keep me busy for the next month or so. Madison's certificates from the Kennel Club came through, so they are now framed and have pride of place on my office wall. alongside all their rosettes.....

28th May 2012

Our day at Bath Champ Show winning the Bitch CC and Best of Breed

We set off early as I wanted to get to the show in plenty of time for Madison to settle. The journey wasn’t too bad, a few roadwork hold ups but nothing too terrible. Got to Bath and found my bench, settled Madison in then found a seat ringside to watch the judging. I was handling a friends basset for her in Limit Dog, so after that stint in the ring I went to get Madison……eventually it was Open Bitch Class…..I honestly went in expecting nothing but obviously hoping for a place. We did our bit, and I have to say Madison was showing herself very well…..lined up and wow, the judge (Pam Coulbert) gave me first place…..I felt this big grin appear on my face…..how clever was my Madison. Anyway, straight back in the ring we go for all the winning bitches……and low and behold my Madison got the CC….at this point I was so excited, I truly couldn’t believe Madison had just beaten all the winning bitches. But then the dilemma…..I have to go then and challenge for Best of Breed….Mrs Marianne Nixon had won the Dog CC…..my thoughts were….Oh NO…what do I do….bassets being one of the high profile breeds and the Crufts fiasco…..it went through my head as to whether I should challenge for BOB or not. Some kind encouraging words from other basset people and in I went thinking YES, my Madison is sound and healthy….and anyway, I really only had to worry if I won BOB…..well guess what, I did win the BOB………and what an amazing feeling it was. Words just can’t express the feeling of getting your first CC and then the BOB….but then I was faced with the veterinary check, so at that point it could all be taken away from me if the vet failed Madison. That walk to the vet tent was awful. I cant begin to tell you how scared I was. My tummy was doing somersaults. Thankfully Madison flew through the vet check, he was very thorough but very gentle with her so it was all good….. Eighteen months ago I thought I would never get Madison back in the show ring after she had a fright. I worked really hard on building up her confidence and actually getting her to enjoy herself in the ring. I’m so glad now that I persevered, it was only ever a dream to win a CC….and now I have actually got one. It will be framed and have pride of place along with Madison’s other winning ribbons…..Many thanks to Pam Coulbert for thinking Madison was worthy. This day will certainly take some beating……Way to go Madison x x x

7th April 2012

Went to Exonian Canine Association Show today and Morgan ended up Reserve Best in Show,  she showed her little socks off and I couldn't of asked anymore of her, she was fantastic and Im really so thrilled......A pic below of her receiving her rosette and shield with the judge, (Mrs B Stoneham) and also the winning Best in Show dog a Rough Collie...and a pic of all her rosettes for the day.....it was a lovely day and Im still beaming!!

Went to Wadebridge to a show the following day and it was Madisons turn to come home with Best of Breed, I have to say considering they have only just come back into the ring after more than a 12month break they are both doing extremely well....and Im thoroughly enjoying myself.

20th March, 2012

Had a lovely day out at Crufts, was great watching the judging ringside and catching up with lots of people.  I took Madison to her first show in 18 months and couldn't believe how well she did.  She got placed 1st, then got the Best of Breed, and in the Group she was placed 2nd.  I was thrilled, and really didn't expect to do so well first time out after being out of the ring so long.  Morgan was in the same class as Madison and got the 2nd place.  Had a really good day out and now looking forward to the next.  Off to Scotland in April for a long weekend as we have 2 shows planned.  So lots of practice needed for that, but I have entered a couple of shows prior to that so hopefully that will help Madison to really settle back into it.  Angela and Ken came down with Ellie, their basset, as always it was lovely to see them, we all went off for a walk in the woods.  Dave is still here, less than a week left before he goes back home, hes such a sweetie, I hardly know I have got him, the girls take it in turn to wash his face and he just sits there like a Lord!! What a clever boy!! We will miss him when he does go though, he settled in like hes always been here, luckily he doesn't live too far away so will get to see him often.

I passed the first Module of the Dog Training and Behaviour course I enrolled on.  I was sent my diploma, which is all rather exciting, must get my act together and get on with the next section now, life has been incredibly busy with one thing and another,  just haven't had much time to do anything leisurely. The van is a dream, makes life so much easier when taking the dogs out and its lower so easier to get them in and out of.  Don't know how I managed without it now !!

28th February, 2012

I have decided that I simply have the best hubby ever......he has only gone and bought me a gorgeous red van for taking the dogs out in....its perfect for showing, can easily fit two crates in the back with all the other bits and pieces I need, and the dogs all fit in brilliantly when we are just off somewhere different for a walk.....so I no longer have dog hairs in the car.....phew!!  Morgan has been coming along quite well at ringcraft after being out of the ring for over a year now.....we went to Cornwall to our first show and she got a 2nd....it was more for practice than anything and she did very well.....Madison wanted to go as well so Im going to take her back to ringcraft and see how she does.  Ive decided I will just take them both out and have some fun.

I went up to Newbury with a friend and attended the Royal Canin Breeders Convention Day....it was very informative and interesting, they also laid on a lovely buffet lunch and coffee and tea at every interval.  Really enjoyed the day.....

I have just enrolled on a Dog Training and Behaviour Course.  there are 6 modules to get through, and then a practical assessment....its really interesting and hopefully at the end I will be a qualified Dog Trainer.

We have my friends little basset 'Dave' coming to stay for a few weeks in March while she jets off to Australia.....Daisy will be in her element having him to play with, not sure why I'm calling him little as he is a big boy now.  He is so lovely, I'm really looking forward to having him....

Zeus is much, much better which is a huge relief. Just hope it continues and he doesn't get poorly again. Keeping a close eye on him but its all looking good at the moment.  Been on lots of different walks with the dogs....Ebony did a runner on me in the woods......I could hear her bouncing around but she wouldn't come back, she had a great time.....I would like to say the bassets behave themselves when out on a walk, but Daisy will lead them all astray given half a chance!!

5th February, 2012

January ended as badly as it started.......but I'm hoping we are all over the worst of it.....Zeus has got a bladder infection, hes 12 now so it has hit him hard, the vet did blood tests etc and as far as they can see its nothing terrible, but if he doesn't improve with the medication he is on then it could be a tumour in the bladder.....he is improving though, trying to feed him lots as he has lost so much weight, he is sporting a rather lovely doggy coat to try and keep him warm, its all going in the right direction so I'm hopeful he will soon be back to his usual happy bouncy self......will keep you posted on his progress.....

I have now started my treatment to hopefully get me better from my long term illness......its probably going to make me feel pretty rough for a while until the correct dosage is reached, in the meantime I have to have weekly blood tests and regular chest xrays, but I'm hopeful in the long run it will really help......maybe this time next year I will be running a marathon....in my dreams I think but no harm in hoping!!

I have returned to ringcraft with Morgan, to get some practice in, she is doing really well and her confidence is building....we have a local Open Show in March, so getting her ready for that, she hasn't been in the show ring for over a year now so it will be great to be back out there again seeing all the regular faces.....

My hubby (Lance) took me out for the day on Sunday, we went to Boscastle in Cornwall, had lunch in the local pub, which was really lovely, then we went for a walk around the village.  We went into the National Trust Shop and they have a video of the dreadful Floods that caused total destruction of the village.  It was really interesting and great to see it now all back together.  Some fabulous shops there as well, saw a gorgeous leather handbag in one little shop, think we might have to have another visit down there very soon......I did bring back a little momento, a wooden duck called Kate from 'the duck company'.....she is now with the rest of my collection, which is growing rather nicely, all different colours and sizes and all with their own names......

The home landline has been out of order for over a week now, finally its repaired, thank goodness for mobile phones and thank goodness my internet is via satellite and I don't say that very often !!  Its turned really cold here,  minus 5 this morning, which isn't as cold as some places but I really don't like the cold so Im staying in as much as possible, feet up in-front of the rayburn reading my book with bassets on the sofa beside me and perhaps warming my feet on another.....sheer bliss......

Remembered to take my camera on a couple of walks, went into Okehampton Park, then went off into the woods, and then at the weekend Lance took me and the girls to North Devon to the beach, its called The Burrows....the bassets had a wonderful time....Morgan came flying down the beach at one point towards me and ran straight into Madison who promptly fell over....she was covered in sand, it was very funny but you probably needed to be there to appreciate it....I have put together a slideshow of them out on their travels below......
